 What is a blacksmith?

I guess now a day, one might conjure up the image of a blacksmith as some one who makes horse shoes, and shoes a horse. In a way, I guess, that would be correct. But in these days, modern times, those people are called farriers.

Back in the day tho, blacksmiths were very important people, they not only made the shoes for horses, but the nails that secured them, the tools used to make them, the bits in the horses mouths, chains, gates, axes, guns, plows, everything that was in the kitchen, at the hearth, the needles your great grand mother used to sew with, all the things that seemed Escentual to live, and actually were back then, were made by a blacksmith, and that lost art and skill IS still alive today. As a matter of fact, it is thriving.

Have you ever straightened a bent nail, ground or filed metal, lit a charcoal fire, removed a dent, drilled or punched a hole, sharpened a knife, soldered two pieces of something together, or even used a hack saw? Well these are all basic blacksmithing skills. Skills that still linger in todays society. Sadly tho, nowadays, people buy junk, and then throw it away, just to get new junk. There are still 100 year old plus usefull pieces of hand made tools and utensils out there every where, millions of them, even today. Doubt it? Ever see an old file before? The reason its  still around is cause it's quality.... How about your grand ma's prized butcher knife, or that plate rack? You see? And there are new ones being made every day, by people like me, and by others. Things that will last for generations.

Note;
One Aim that I have for my web site is to make it more user friendly. Rather then making it all one continuous, endless scroll, I opted to try to lay it out, as if it were a “News Paper”. So that folks like me don’t get lost. Let me know if it helps any.

I know this page was suposed to be about
me, but I thought it important to talk about
the modern basic history of blacksmithing,
and maybe strike up some interest in it. I
will put up new pages as time permits,
so be patient with me, as I am new at this,
and it's alot to figure out. Any feed back
would be helpfull. Thanks.

  I have a good friend, I
consider him like a brother too me, he
also has a web page up. He makes
hammers, tools and nice Native American
Crafts. I would sincerely hope that you
will take the time and go there to check
him out. I call him “Travis”. Tell him
I said "hi".
My goal isn’t to become a BIG mega site, with like 1000 contributors and six web masters. There are plenty of them out there. And there is nothing at all wrong with them. In fact many of them are Great sites . But that’s not what I am about. I’m a little more basic then the big ones, I simply enjoy making amenities that people can afford, might use every day, pass on to their children,  And hopefully not wide up hanging on someones garage wall shomewhere . Plus, being the sole owner operator of this site, doesn’t afford me the time to do all those things, and still have time to smith, nor do I have the  knowlege, or talent, in the blacksmithing arena to compete with them collectively, nor would I even try to. I trust that you will take my humble site for what it is, which is “a plain blacksmith, sharing part of his life, and what he does, for those who are interested”.
